Sigmund Freud, Berggasse 19

Although Sigmund Freud and Ludwig Wittgenstein likely never met in person, a number of significant connections link their lives and thought. Wittgenstein refers to Freud and his intellectual world on several occasions in his philosophical writings. Furthermore, individuals close to Wittgenstein—including his sister, Margaret Stonborough, and his friend, Frank Ramsey—underwent psychoanalytic treatment in Vienna. It is also noteworthy that Margaret Stonborough played a crucial role in securing Freud’s safe passage to England in 1938.
