Sigmund Freud, Berggasse 19

Although Sigmund Freud and Ludwig Wittgenstein likely never met in person, a number of significant connections link their lives and thought. Wittgenstein refers to Freud and his intellectual world on several occasions in his philosophical writings. Furthermore, individuals close to Wittgenstein – including his sister, Margaret Stonborough, and his friend, Frank Ramsey – underwent psychoanalytic treatment in Vienna. Margaret Stonborough also played a crucial role in securing Freud’s safe passage to England in 1938.
